How to Choose Top Hammer Drill Rods: 5 Checks Before Ordering

Time: 2026-10-27 12:01:45

Click:

Ordering top hammer drill rods requires more than confirming a thread name and a price. Rod length, connection type, body dimensions and equipment compatibility all need to be checked before production.

For buyers sourcing replacement rods or comparing suppliers, the following five checks can help make enquiries clearer and reduce specification errors.

1. Confirm Your Drilling Equipment and Existing Drill String

Start with the drilling rig and rock drill model, together with the specifications of the rods currently in use.

Top hammer drill rods transmit percussion energy, rotation and feed force through the drill string. They must work with the existing shank adapter, coupling arrangement and drill bit.

Top hammer rods and DTH drill pipes serve different drilling systems and should not be selected interchangeably. For this guide, the focus is on threaded rods for top hammer drilling.

If you are replacing an existing product, an accurate part number, drawing or complete specification is a useful starting point.

2. Check the Thread and Connection Type

Common top hammer thread specifications include R32, R38, T38, T45 and T51. However, the thread designation alone does not fully describe a rod.

Confirm the connection at both ends and whether you need:

  • MF rods: a male thread at one end and a female connection at the other.
  • MM rods: male threads at both ends, typically used with separate coupling sleeves.

Some rods use different thread specifications at each end. Always state both ends clearly when requesting a quotation.

When comparing replacement products, check compatibility with the complete drill string rather than assuming that a similar-looking thread will fit correctly.

3. Match Rod Length and Body Dimensions to the Rig

Rod length must suit the rig’s feed system, rod-handling equipment and available working space. Total hole depth alone is not enough to determine the correct rod length.

Longer rods may reduce the number of rod changes, but only when the equipment can accommodate them.

Rod-body dimensions also matter. Confirm whether the rod is round or hexagonal, its outside diameter or across-flats dimension, and the flushing-hole size where specified.

A larger rod body can provide greater stiffness, but changing the diameter also affects clearance and equipment compatibility. Any change from the existing configuration should be checked against the equipment requirements.

4. Discuss Operating Conditions and Previous Problems

Tell the supplier whether the rods will be used for surface bench drilling, tunnelling or underground production drilling. Include the typical hole diameter, hole depth and rock conditions.

If you are looking for an improvement over your current rods, describe the problem specifically:

  • Thread wear or damage.
  • Fractures near the threaded ends.
  • Rod-body breakage.
  • Corrosion or internal pitting.
  • Hole deviation.

These observations help the supplier review the application. A failure should not automatically be attributed to steel quality: operating parameters, alignment, flushing, worn mating components and handling practices may also need investigation.

Ask suppliers to explain their material specification, heat treatment and inspection controls. These details are more useful than general claims such as “premium quality” or “longer life.”

5. Compare Field Performance and Cost per Metre

Once compatibility is confirmed, compare suppliers through a controlled field test.

Where practical, use comparable equipment, operating conditions and recording methods. Track the total metres drilled by each rod, the reason for replacement and consistency across the test batch.

A basic comparison is:

Rod purchase cost per metre = Rod purchase price ÷ Total metres drilled by that rod

For a broader operating-cost comparison, also consider downtime, replacement labour and the effect of failures on other drill-string components.

A higher purchase price needs to be justified by measurable benefits. A lower-priced rod can also be a suitable choice if it performs consistently and meets the application requirements.

What to Include in Your Drill Rod Enquiry

To help a supplier identify the correct product, provide:

  • Drilling rig and rock drill model.
  • Thread specification at both ends.
  • MF or MM connection.
  • Rod length and length reference, if shown on the drawing.
  • Rod-body shape and dimensions.
  • Required quantity.
  • Typical hole diameter, depth and operating conditions.
  • Existing part number or drawing, if available.
