How to Choose Top Hammer Drill Rods from China
Practical purchasing insights from Cris, for overseas buyers
When sourcing top hammer drill rods from China, buyers often face a question: why do products with seemingly identical specifications come with very different prices, while every supplier claims to offer good quality?
Raw materials, manufacturing processes, heat treatment and quality control all help explain these differences. However, the final purchasing decision should also consider operating conditions and actual test results.

1. Raw Materials: Look Beyond the Steel Mill’s Name
China has many major steel producers, including Baowu, Ansteel, HBIS, Shougang, Shagang, Jianlong, Shandong Iron & Steel, Shijiazhuang Iron & Steel, Hunan Valin and CITIC Pacific Special Steel, as well as smaller mills. For top hammer drill rods, buyers should specifically confirm the source and specification of the drill steel used.
Raw material prices can vary considerably depending on the source, steel grade and quality requirements. Among the supplier quotations I have reviewed, some raw material prices have differed by approximately 50–60%. This is an observation from my purchasing experience; it does not mean that steel quality or finished rod service life differs by the same percentage.
Besides asking for the steel mill’s name, buyers can check:
- The complete steel grade and chemical composition.
- Whether material certificates and heat-number traceability are available.
- How the manufacturer inspects incoming materials and controls consistency between batches.
A recognised steel mill’s name is a useful reference. Material specifications and inspection records provide a clearer basis for evaluation.

2. Steel Grade: The Same Grade Can Deliver Different Results
23CrNi3Mo is one of the commonly used materials for top hammer threaded drill rods in China. I have also worked with manufacturers using 22CrNi3Mo and received positive feedback on their products.
Buyers should confirm the complete steel designation. For example, grade 40 steel, 40Cr and 40CrNiMo are different materials and should not be treated as interchangeable. If a supplier uses an abbreviated description, check the material certificate.
The steel grade is a starting point. Even when manufacturers use the same grade, differences in material control, processing and heat treatment can affect the finished product.
A material designation alone cannot predict a drill rod’s service life.
3. Hollow Drill Steel Manufacturing: Understand the Process and Inspection
Hollow drill steel can be manufactured through different process routes, including drilling a central hole in the billet before rolling with a core, or hot piercing followed by forming.
In a billet-drilling process, drilling removes part of the central material. Its effect should be assessed together with the billet’s original quality and the subsequent manufacturing steps. The term “rolling with a core” alone does not establish that segregation has been completely eliminated.
Different process routes may involve differences in material utilisation, production costs, bore quality and defect control. Buyers can ask which process the supplier uses and how the manufacturer checks the internal bore, wall thickness uniformity and related defects.
Understanding the process helps explain price differences. Finished-product inspection and field performance help verify its practical value.
4. Heat Treatment: Check Hardness, Toughness and Batch Consistency
Manufacturers may use different heat-treatment parameters, resulting in differences in hardness distribution, toughness and wear resistance.
Under similar operating conditions, rods from one manufacturer may perform well while another manufacturer’s rods deliver less satisfactory results. This may involve product quality, compatibility with the equipment, operating practices or suitability for the application. The actual failure mode needs to be examined.
For carburising, processing time is worth asking about, but “10–15 hours” versus “5–7 hours” is not enough to determine quality. Temperature, carbon potential, target effective case depth, and subsequent quenching and tempering must also be considered.
Some manufacturers I have worked with organise heat-treatment batches by product specification, processing identical products or products with similar requirements together. This is a useful production-management detail to discuss.
Buyers should also check whether the manufacturer has defined suitable process requirements, measures surface and core hardness, and maintains consistent inspection results.

5. Pricing: Make Sure You Are Comparing Equivalent Products
Based on my purchasing experience, quotations for Chinese top hammer drill rods can broadly be grouped into four price tiers. For some quotations with the same specifications, similar quantities and the same trade terms, the difference between the highest and lowest prices has reached approximately 40–50%.
This is an experience-based grouping of suppliers I have encountered, rather than a standard classification for the entire Chinese market.
When comparing quotations, confirm the steel grade, rod dimensions, connection type, heat treatment, quantity, packaging and delivery terms. Differences in these conditions can make a simple unit-price comparison misleading.
Higher-priced products need to demonstrate their value through consistency, service life and support. Lower-priced products also need to demonstrate that they can reliably meet the buyer’s requirements.
6. How Can Overseas Buyers Find a Suitable Supplier?
Some experienced buyers of Chinese drilling tools test products from several suppliers instead of making decisions solely on technical descriptions.
They investigate which products perform more consistently with their equipment and operating conditions, and which offer a lower cost per drilled metre. They then select suppliers based on the results.
For an initial purchase, buyers can choose a few representative rod specifications for testing and record:
- Equipment, rock conditions and key operating parameters.
- Total metres drilled by each rod.
- Reasons for replacement, such as thread wear, rod-body fracture or other failures.
- Consistency among rods from the same batch.
- How the supplier investigates and handles problems.
These records support purchasing decisions and help suppliers make more targeted improvements.
Purchasing priorities also differ between markets. Strong local production and supply competition may create greater price pressure. Buyers who place more emphasis on consistency and operating reliability may be willing to consider mid-range or higher-priced products.
Suppliers need to understand these differences and offer options suited to the customer.
7. Finally, Compare Cost per Drilled Metre
Suppose a higher-priced rod has a rod purchase cost of US$1.50 per drilled metre, calculated from its actual service life. Another, lower-priced rod performs consistently under comparable conditions and costs US$1.20—or even US$1.00—per drilled metre.
Which would you choose?
These figures are illustrative examples. The rod’s purchase cost per drilled metre can be calculated as:
Rod purchase cost ÷ Total metres drilled during its service life
To evaluate the wider operating cost, buyers should also consider replacement time, downtime, labour and other related expenses.
In my view, selecting top hammer drill rods from China requires both an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes and sufficient attention to field testing.
A supplier worth working with over the long term should provide rods that perform consistently in your application, offer a reasonable operating cost, and support you when problems arise.
